Penn College Faculty, Students Participate in Computing Conference

Poler, Danville.Seven students and three faculty members representing Pennsylvania College of Technology's information technology majors attended the 15th annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges Northeastern Conference, held April 16 at Connecticut's University of Hartford.

Three of the students David Schor, of Breinigsville; Gregory T. Poler, of Danville; and Michael F. Altobelli, of Eldersburg, Md. competed in the annual programming contest, placing fifth among 29 participating colleges. Another student, Paul S. Hitt, of Watsontown, presented a poster on "Customized Linux Distribution for Astronomical Data Collaboration."

Other students who attended CCSCNE-2010 were Ryan M. Sokol, of McKees Rocks; Nicholas A. Cafarchio, of Aspers; and Elizabeth A. Finch, Williamsport. The students were accompanied by Bahram Golshan, an associate professor of computer science, who coordinated their attendance and coaches the programming team.

Poler, Cafarchio and Finch are enrolled in the School of Business and Computer Technologies' information technology: web and applications technology emphasis major; Schor and Hitt major in the information technology: security specialist concentration; Schor is in the information technology: network specialist concentration; and Sokol is an information technology: information assurance and security concentration major.

Pat Coulter and Denise Leete, associate professors of computer science, offered a faculty poster titled "A Web Design & Multimedia Degree With a Twist." The presentation summarized a new online major for working professionals who have earned associate degrees in fine arts, graphic design, communications and related areas.

The conference brings together faculty/staff and students from academic institutions throughout the Northeast for exchange of ideas and information concerning undergraduate computing curricula.
