Penn College to Host Eastern Archery Event Saturday, Sunday

Penn College Wildcat Tales Over the course of their season, Pennsylvania College of Technology archers spend hours on the road traveling hundreds of miles to and from competitive events. This weekend, however, others will travel as the Wildcats host the Eastern Regional Intercollegiate Archery Championships.

Action will take place Saturday and Sunday on campus next to the Field House along College Avenue with up to 70 archers from at least six colleges and universities. Competition will begin at noon Saturday, with practice immediately followed by ranking rounds. Head-to-head elimination rounds will take place starting at 9 a.m. Sunday. That will be followed by team rounds that should conclude between 1 and 2 p.m., depending on the weather.

"I expect the guys and girls are going to do really well this year. We've got a really, really strong team," said Wildcats coach Chad Karstetter. "I expect we're going to have a real good turnout and they're going to see a pretty good show."

Top Penn College archers who are nationally ranked are veterans Zachary Plannick (Coraopolis) and Dan Wido (Shickshinny) in men's compound, Glen Thomas (Mercer) in men's recurve and Lindsey Fackler (Halifax) in female compound, according to the coach.

Saturday, in outdoor action at the University of Connecticut, Wido finished first in men's compound, Thomas won the men's recurve and Fackler won in women's compound. There was no team competition.

"It was a great event. We shot excellent," Karstetter said afterward.

BaseballPenn College opened the week with a sweep of Penn State Scranton by scores of 9-1 and 14-1 in five innings. In the first game, Tom Hughes (Easton) went 3 for 4 with a triple, two runs batted in and three runs scored. In the second game, Hughes tripled and drove in another run, while Justin Crowther (Bear, Del.) went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Bill Sisko (Pine Grove) 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Ryan Herrmann (Silverdale) 2 for 2 with three runs scored. On the mound in the nightcap, Ethan Boyd (Roaring Springs) and Ben Stover (Hershey) combined on a 2-hitter.

On Saturday, Penn College extended its win string to three by beating Penn State York, 6-1, before dropping the second game, 6-5.

Overall, the Wildcats are 8-9. In Penn State University Athletic Conference play they are 6-6 and tied for fifth place, six games behind unbeaten Penn State Greater Allegheny. Penn College was ranked No. 12 during the Week 4 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches Poll.

Softball On Tuesday, the Wildcats knocked off Penn State Scranton by scores of 4-1 and 8-2. In the first game, Amber Claar (Claysburg) went 2 for 3 at the plate with a home run and, in the second game, Kristin Bernard (Mifflin) went 2 for 3 and Amanda Baney (Williamsport) went 2 for 4. Saturday against Penn State Beaver, Penn College dropped two by scores of 11-2 and 17-3. On Sunday against Penn State Fayette, the Wildcats won the opener, 5-3, and 3-2.

Penn College closes out its regular season with games Tuesday (home against Penn State Hazleton) and Thursday (at Penn State Mont Alto). Going into Sunday's action, it was 10-8 overall and 7-3 in the PSUAC, tied for third behind unbeaten Penn State Hazleton andPenn StateBeaver. In the Week 4 USCAA Coaches Poll, Penn College was ranked No. 11 in the nation.
