Forest Technology Faculty Member Presents at National Conference

An assistant professor of forest technology at Pennsylvania College of Technology recently presented a session titled "Forest Technology Program Outcome Assessment" at the 8th Biennial Conference on University Education in Natural Resources at Virginia Tech.

G. Andrew Bartholomay's presentation discussed Penn College's new Outcome Assessment initiative and how it is being applied in the forest technology program. His Forest Surveying I class was used as an example of how course-outcome assessment works in concert with program assessment.

The college's Quality Through Assessment program aids in evaluating the institutional mission to "provide students with quality academic programs that respond to economic and employment realities." The initiative employs outcome assessment at three levels: institution, academic school and program. The forest technology faculty has been charged with incorporating outcome assessment into its ongoing curricular evaluation process.

Conference attendees were supportive of the manner in which institutional and accreditation goals and advisory-group input were able to be assimilated into a relevant curriculum with measureable outcomes. Attendees also were supportive of the forest technology program's flexibility in addressing ever-changing student, faculty and industry needs.

Bartholomay holds a doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University, a master's degree from the University of New Hampshire, a bachelor's degree from SUNY/College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and an associate degree from Paul Smith's College.
