Penn College Baseball, Softball Teams Go 5-7 for Week

Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball and softball teams went a combined 5-7 last week the softball team, which now is 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference, going 5-3 and the baseball team, which is 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the PSUAC, going 0-4.

Baseball On Tuesday, the Wildcats lost to Penn State Beaver, 13-2 and 3-2, and, on Saturday, they fell to Penn State Greater Allegheny, 3-2 and 6-0, extending their losing streak to five.

"We're not coming up with the timely hits that we need," coach Chris Howard said. "We need to be more aggressive and get back to being a more of a free-swinging team.

"We are not out of the conference playoffs by any stretch of the imagination. Our backs are against the wall. We're probably going to have to run the table the rest of the year in the conference to get it done, but I believe we can do it," Howard added. "We've got the team to do it. We've just got to get the confidence. We need that one little spark to get everybody going. All it's going to take is a big hit here, or a big hit there and I think we can start putting it together."

Penn College was ranked No. 13 during the Week 3 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches Poll.

Softball In their PSUAC opener Tuesday, the Wildcats beat Penn State Schuylkill, 13-1 and 17-7. In the first game, Erin Bannon (Williamsport) went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and Lacy Lose (Avis) tossed a three-hitter. In the nightcap, Samantha Mills (Harrisburg) went 2 for 3.

In non-conference action at NCAA Division III Susquehanna University on Thursday, Penn College fell by scores of 12-1 and 11-3. Amanda Baney homered in the first game.

On Saturday at Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn College won 16-2 and 9-4. Baney, Tiffany Deihm (Mohnton) and Lose each had three hits in the first game and Lose tossed a four-hitter to get the win. Baney added two more hits in the second game.

On Sunday at Penn State New Kensington, the Wildcats dropped their opener 9-8 in 8 innings, but bounced back to win the second contest, 14-4 in 5 innings. In the first game, Baney went 3 for 5 with two runs batted, but seven errors took their toll. In the second game, Amber Claar (Claysburg) went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBI while Baney went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

In the Week 3 USCAA Coaches Poll, Penn College was ranked No. 20 in the nation.
