Penn College Hoops Teams Playing for Postseason Position

Vol. 8, No. 27 (Through Sunday, Feb. 14)

Pennsylvania College of Technology men's and women's basketball teams are assured of Penn State University Athletic Conference playoff games Sunday; the only question is whether they will be at home or on the road.

Due to late-season snowstorms, the PSUAC playoffs were pushed back a week to allow teams to complete their regular seasons, according to Commissioner John Fritz. The Wildcats are at Penn State Scranton Monday night and host Penn State Beaver on Thursday. Elite 8 games are scheduled for Sunday, with the Final 4 on tap Feb. 27 and championships Feb. 28.

The Penn College men are 9-4 in the conference (11-12 overall) going into Monday's game and tied with Penn State Wilkes-Barre for first place in the North Division. Penn State Scranton is 1-12 in the conference and 3-13 overall, while Penn State Beaver is 13-1 in the PSUAC and 16-7 overall. The Wildcats own an earlier win over Penn State Scranton, 99-70. They have not yet played Penn State Beaver.

The Lady Wildcats are 7-5 in the PSUAC and 8-13 overall. They are one game behind Penn State Wilkes-Barre in the North Division standings. Penn State Scranton is 1-11 in the PSUAC and 1-12 overall, while Penn State Beaver is 11-1 in the conference and 20-3 overall. In its only previous game against either opponent, Penn College topped Penn State Scranton, 61-42.

Flashback Men's BasketballOn Tuesday at home against Penn State Hazleton, the Wildcats built a 14-point halftime lead and went on for a 117-100 win. Joe Simon (Renovo) led the scoring parade with a personal season-high 34 points. He was followed by Greg Solyak (Lancaster) with 28 points and Leroy Joiner (Williamsport) with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Saturday at Penn State Brandywine, Simon scored 27, Solyak 22 and Joiner 17 in a 97-78 win. Joiner now has 899 points in his two-year career. In the Week 10 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Coaches' Poll, the Wildcats are No. 12.

Women's BasketballAt home with Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday, Penn College opened a 22-point halftime lead and coasted to a 75-44 victory. Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) scored 21 points, Jess Strasser (Hawley) had 20 and Jess Hohman (South Williamsport) added 16.

Thursday's scheduled game at Marywood University was postponed until Tuesday due to snow, then canceled with a renewed threat of inclement weather.

Saturday at Penn State Brandywine, the Wildcats lost, 79-64. Casey Braun (Hughesville) scored 17 points and Strasser added 15. In the most recent USCAA Coaches' Poll, the Wildcats are ranked No. 25 nationally.

Men's Volleyball Penn College improved to 7-0 on the season with wins Saturday over club teams from Susquehanna University and Penn State Altoona. The match against Altoona went five sets, and coach Wes Strayer said afterward, "Even if we would have lost, it was a great match."

On the Horizon Bowling The Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Championships at Summit Lanes in Pocono Summit, scheduled for last Wednesday, were postponed by snow and rescheduled for this Wednesday.

In Penn College's last outing Jan. 26, it edged Northampton Community College by 67 pins. Aaron Smith, a freshman from Waynesboro, had a high single game of 299 and series of 715. Northampton, however, held onto first place in the overall standings by 150 pins.
