Staff Member Presents at National Assessment Conference
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Jeremiah C. Gee, outcomes assessment specialist in Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Integrated Studies, recently presented a workshop at the 2009 Assessment Institute in Indianapolis.
Titled "Streamlining and Sustaining Assessment," Gee's presentation drew an audience of more than 100 faculty, staff and administrators at institutions of higher education across the United States and from abroad. The workshop focused on practical, hands-on tools that can be used by faculty and staff to establish a meaningful assessment process.
Gee's workshop also showed how to align strategic and long-range institutional goals with student learning outcomes. He highlighted how goals and outcomes can be tied to assessment, planning and resource allocation. A variety of tools were presented for use with students for course work, with faculty for program planning and review, and with administration for institutional planning and review.
Gee described how assessment can be used for internal benefits as well as for external reporting. "Many institutions think that they need two separate assessment processes for internal and external needs," he said, "but developing a streamlined assessment system means that you will be able to spend less time figuring out how to collect the data and more time discussing and using your data."
The Assessment Institute is the nation's oldest and largest event focused exclusively on outcomes assessment in higher education. It is hosted by Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Gee earned a master's degree in education at Mansfield University and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Nyack College Manhattan Center. Currently, he is a doctoral student in The Pennsylvania State University's adult education program.
