Professors Recommend Multidisciplinary Capstone Courses

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Asesh K. DasThree members of Pennsylvania College of Technology's information technology faculty recently delivered a research paper at the IEEE Southeastern Conference in Atlanta.

Sandra GorkaAsesh K. Das, professor of computer science joined by School of Business and Computer Technologies colleagues Jacob R. Miller and Sandra Gorka, associate professors of computer science presented "Designing Multidisciplinary Capstone Courses A Knowledge Engineering Approach" at the four-day conference.

In the paper, the authors relied on their senior-project teaching experience to assert that all capstone courses required for students in every bachelor-degree major at Penn College should follow IEEE (originally the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission standards.

Such uniformity, the faculty members wrote, would address all stakeholders' concerns on different subject domains and varying viewpoints, among other considerations.

Jacob R. Miller According to the authors, all senior-project outcome assessments should become an integral part of the college's unified knowledge-engineering activities, focusing the institutional mission as much as possible.

The IEEE Southeastern Conference the 2009 theme was "Engineers Make the World a Better Place" is the most influential conference in IEEE Region 3 for promoting awareness of the technical contributions made by professionals. It brings together faculty and students in electrical and computer engineering and computer science to share the latest information through technical sessions, tutorials, professional-development sessions and exhibits.

The region comprises Alabama, Florida and Georgia; areas of Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia; and the country of Jamaica.
