Students to Provide Taxpayer Assistance at North Campus

Monday, January 26, 2009

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Pennsylvania College of Technology students prepare income-tax returns at no cost, will offer three Fridays of by-appointment-only help to Northern Tier residents this season.

The program will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 20, March 20 and April 3 at Penn College's North Campus, along Route 6 between Wellsboro and Mansfield.

Accounting, business, finance and legal assistant students at the college are annually trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service to be volunteer tax preparers. Several of those students along with coordinator Phillip D. Landers, professor of business administration and accounting in the college's School of Business and Computer Technologies will conduct the North Campus appointments in 40-minute time slots.

Landers said the VITA program focuses on uncomplicated returns with income of $45,000 or less no businesses, stock sales, complicated pension plans, etc. Taxpayers need to bring proof of identification, Social Security numbers, spousal and dependents' birth dates, important tax documents such as W-2 and 1099 forms, and simple retirement or unemployment information.

To make an appointment with a tax volunteer, call (570) 724-7703. North Campus parking is available at the rear of the building.

Similar appointments, to be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays through early April, soon will be announced for the college's main campus in Williamsport.
