Two Honored With Outstanding Varsity Athletic Alumni Awards

Pennsylvania College of Technology has presented Outstanding Varsity Athletic Alumni Awards to Chad L. Karstetter, of Salona, and Katlyn D. Stupar, of State College.

The honors were bestowed Oct. 11 during Homecoming 2008 festivities at the college.

To be eligible for the award, recipients must have been a varsity athlete for two or more years, demonstrate the importance of their education at Penn College, participate in leadership roles and demonstrate a commitment to the community in which they reside, and be a graduate of the college or its immediate predecessor institution, Williamsport Area Community College.

Karstetter, who graduated in 1999 with an associate degree in forest technology, has served as head coach of Penn College's archery team since 2001 and is employed by the college as a horticulturist. Previously, he worked for Eldred Contracting Inc. and Chappell's Archery, both of Mill Hall.

He was a three-time All-American in archery from 1997-99 and was part of the Penn College team that won national championships in 1998 and 1999. He made the USA World team in 1997 and 1999. He came to Penn College in the spring of 1997 with 14 years of archery experience, winning nationals and a world title as a young adult.

At Penn College, Karstetter has coached 17 All-Americans and started male recurve and female compound teams. The college's archery team has been competitively ranked with top colleges and universities across the country since 1997. Last year, the team won the male compound national title.

Stupar graduated with an associate degree in baking and pastry arts in 2006. She works as an independent cake designer/baker (Katy-did Cakes) in the State College area. She also is seeking certification as a personal trainer.

Previously, she was a hospitality assistant/pastry chef at Penn College's Le Jeune Chef Restaurant; a pastry chef at Penn State University Bakery, State College; and a basketball camp assistant/coach at State College Area High School and Camp Booya, Penns Valley High School.

At Penn College, where she also served as a Resident Assistant in student housing, Stupar was co-captain of the college's women's basketball team. She established career, single-season and single-game scoring records and was a member of a squad that won a Penn State University Athletic Conference championship in 2006.

Stupar was the winner of a 2006 wedding-cake competition at the college sponsored by CalJava International Inc., founded by world-renowned cake decorator Daniel Budiman. She took second place in a Grand Pastry Buffet chocolate sculpture competition.
