Veteran Administrator, Coach to Lead Penn College Athletics

Douglas T. ByerlyDouglas T. Byerly has been named director of athletics at Pennsylvania College of Technology, a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University.

Byerly during his introduction to the college community Wednesday."Byerly joins Penn College with 22 years of athletic experience: first as an athletic director, coach and teacher at Line Mountain High School, and later in athletic development and admissions at Lock Haven University. He comes to Penn College from Bucknell University, where he has been manager of athletic fundraising.

During this search, we were incredibly impressed with the quality and quantity of candidates we saw," Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour said Wednesday during a press conference at the college. "After a detailed selection process, we were impressed to find our ideal choice right here in northcentral Pennsylvania."

Byerly will succeed Michael J. Stanzione, who is retiring after 25 years with the college the last 17 as athletic director. His retirement is effective Jan. 25, 2010.

"Athletics has grown exponentially at Penn College. Our students are incredibly successful, both inside and outside the classroom, and we are grateful to Mike for all he has done for the college," Gilmour said.

Retiring as Penn College's director of athletics, Michael J. Stanzione addresses an audience in the Student and Administrative Services Center.Byerly said he will focus on growing and further developing the college's entire athletic program.

"It is with great enthusiasm that I anticipate my work on campus to continue to build on the strong base of programs already established by Mike Stanzione and his staff at the varsity-sport level, with diverse intramural programs and recreational and club-sport offerings, as well," Byerly said.­

He lauded the ongoing success of the Wildcat program, which offers 15 varsity sports. Penn College athletic teams finished the 2007-08 academic year with one national championship, four All-Americans, six conference championships and three conference runners-up. Collectively, the college's athletic teams won 207 of 293 games, posting a .706 winning percentage.
