'Cat Tales BaseballThe Wildcats split a twin bill at Alfred (N.Y.) State, easily winning the first game but seeing a 5-0 lead slip away in the second-game extra-inning loss.

"In the second game, we had some defensive issues, but overall we played pretty well," coach Chris Howard said. "It's little things that turn into big things, but it's stuff that we can work on."

Devon Liquori (junior/Hawley) sparked the offense. In the first game, he drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and in the second contest he went 3-for-5 at the plate with a two-run homer and four RBI overall.

Howard also cited the offensive and defensive play of center fielder Dane Glick (sophomore/Belleville).

Cross-CountryThe Penn College men, with 52 points, finished second behind Scranton (36 points) at the Northeast Pennsylvania Cross Country Classic hosted by King's College. Misericordia (53) was third and King's (141) fourth in the eight-team field. Other teams included Cazenovia (153), Baptist Bible (155), Marywood (157) and Wilkes University (221).

Mark Cordeiro, a sophomore from Canton, led the Wildcats with a third-place individual finish over the 6-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 48 seconds. Steven Hoffman (freshman/Ocean City, Md.) was fourth and Tristan Mummert (sophomore/Red Lion) 10th.

For the Penn College women, sophomore Tamara Pavlov finished 19th in 15:33.

Men's SoccerUtilizing a smothering defense that allowed just one shot on goal, Penn College opened its season with a 3-0 win over Penn State Beaver. The win extended the Wildcats' two-season win string to 17. Freshmen Morris Sayon of Upper Darby and Patrick Kehoe of Oley each had a goal and an assist to pace the Wildcats offense.
