Horticulture Instructor Represents College at 'PA Green Expo'
Monday, August 4, 2008
A member of Pennsylvania College of Technology's horticulture faculty participated in the PA Green Expo Nursery and Landscape Wholesale Trade Show, recently held in Harrisburg.
Carl J. Bower Jr., an instructor in the School of Natural Resources Management, represented the college at the fourth annual showcase, held in the Pennsylvania State Farm Show Complex. The event attracted exhibitors from more than 40 states and Canada who produce plants, trees, shrubs, bulbs, flowers and seeds, and who manufacture equipment, hard goods, pavers, stone, mulch, seasonal merchandise, chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides, and landscape and horticultural supplies.
In addition to networking with industry professionals during the July 22-24 event, Bower had the opportunity to answer questions, disseminate information regarding Penn College's ornamental horticulture majors and greet several alumni of the college. He also attended educational sessions on integrated pest management and turfgrass insects.
"We talked to a lot of folks that knew Penn College, either from graduating from the horticulture program or folks that had family or friends graduate from other disciplines, and everyone had positive comments about the school. That's a good feeling," Bower said. "In the same respect, many have yet to hear about us, so it's a good thing to be there and to be able to educate those folks, too."
The school, headquartered at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center 10 miles south of Williamsport, offers three associate-degree majors in ornamental horticulture emphasizing landscape technology, plant production and horticulture retail management.
