The College West Apartment complex emerged as the victor in a recent four-week recycling contest held among Pennsylvania College of Technology's residence halls. The winner was determined by the weight of recyclables produced by each complex compared to the number of residents in the complex.
Coming in second wasRose Street Apartments.
The mini-internal contestamong the residence halls was part of the larger 10-week Recyclemania Contest in which Penn College competed with other schools in the country. That competition ended last week with the crowning of Michigan's Kalamazoo College as champion; Penn College finished in a respectable 127th place.
The college's participation in the program boosted the amount of recyclables collected overall by the college. According to Don Luke, facilities supervisor for General Services, there was a noticeable increase in the amount of recyclables collected on campus this spring. Penn College students, faculty and staff tookmore than46,000 pounds of recyclable products out of the waste stream during the 10-week competition.
"The outcome of Recyclemania was great" commented student Recylemania leader Tiffany James, "It was our first time in this program and I can't wait to see what next year will hold in store for us." Resident Assistant Jamie Lear added, "The students in all complexes did an excellent job with recycling and surprised us with their level of interest in participating in the program."
College West received a victory party with prize giveaways on April 22. Residence Life sends a "Thank you" to everyone who contributed to Penn College's efforts by taking the time to recycle.
