The free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Pennsylvania College of Technology students help local residents prepare income-tax returns, is taking its services "on the road" to the college's North Campus near Wellsboro.
The program will be offered by appointment only from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 28.
Volunteer preparers trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service are accounting, business, finance and legal students at Penn College. Two students and coordinator Phillip D. Landers, professor of business administration and accounting in the School of Business and Computer Technologies, will handle the North Campus appointments in half-hour intervals.
Landers said the VITA program focuses on non-complicated returns with income of $40,000 or less no businesses, stock sales, etc. Taxpayers need to bring proof of identification, Social Security numbers, spouse's and dependents' birth dates, and important tax documents such as W-2 and 1099 forms, etc.
To make an appointment with a tax volunteer, call (570) 724-7703. The North Campus is along Route 6, between Wellsboro and Mansfield. Parking is available at the rear of the building.
On the college's main campus in Williamsport, the annual VITA program has enjoyed a robust start since resuming last month. Students are available to assist taxpayers Monday through Thursday until April 10. Services are not available when Penn College is closed or when students are on Spring Break (March 17-24). The site Room 102 on the first floor of the Madigan Library is for walk-ins only; appointments are not accepted.
