State Health Secretary Visits Campus, Discusses Health Literacy

About 20 nursing students attended the talk by Secretary Johnson Dr. Calvin B. Johnson, state secretary of health, discusses health information literacy On Thursday, Penn College hosted a talk for area health-care providers by State Secretary of Health Dr. Calvin B. Johnson, who addressed issues of health literacy. The event was sponsored by the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition health literacy task force to stress the importance of health literacy in health care. About 20 nursing students also attended, including students from the foundations of nursing course who served as guides for those visiting the campus. Jane J. Benedict, associate professor of nursing and a member of the task force, said it's important to help introductory nursing students to recognize the problems surrounding health literacy so they may be proactive about them from their introductory days of practice.
