Grants to Fund North Campus Practical Nursing Scholarships
Thursday, August 30, 2007
Pennsylvania College of Technology's North Campus has received two grants totaling more than $30,000 to award scholarships to participants in the next class of its Practical Nursing Program, which will begin in January.
Two grants were awarded by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation: a Nursing Education Grant, $25,000; and a Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania Supplemental Nursing Education Grant, $6,340 (a supplemental block grant with funds provided by Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania). The funds will help cover tuition expenses not covered by the Federal PELL Grant Program.
"The Practical Nursing classes of 2006 and 2007 both received scholarship funds, which helped to relieve some of the financial burden that many students face when trying to further their education," said Brenda G. Abplanalp, director of North Campus outreach services. "Because of the tuition assistance, more students are able to complete the program successfully and will enter the local workforce as Licensed Practical Nurses, helping to meet the health-care needs of people in rural Pennsylvania."
The North Campus Practical Nursing Program was developed for learners of all ages who want to improve their employment outlook in health care. The noncredit, vocational program is offered through Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College.
Students attend classes at the North Campus and have clinical experiences at Laurel Health System facilities and at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport.
The program is fully approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. Students who successfully complete the program will be prepared to take the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as an LPN.
The North Campus is located 3 miles east of Wellsboro on Route 6. For information, call (570) 724-7703 or send e-mail .
