Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship Awarded for 2007

A senior at South Williamsport Area High School is the 2007 recipient of the Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship award at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Jason M. McElroy learned of his selection while participating in the 22nd annual "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar, hosted at Penn College by state Sen. Roger A. Madigan.

Madigan is a member of the Penn College Board of Directors. The scholarship was established in memory of his late wife, Peggy, whose many activities included working as a special reading aide in her local school district.

McElroy will enter Penn College's diesel technology associate-degree major this fall. As with all applicants for the Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship, he was required to write an essay describing his community-service activities and the value those activities have added to his community.

McElroy's volunteer activities have included Habitat for Humanity; the United Way's "Day of Caring;" mission trips to Henderson Settlement in Kentucky and homeless shelters in Washington, D.C.; and many Boy Scout and youth-group service projects.

"All of these activities have allowed me to both give back to my community and become a better person through serving others," McElroy wrote.

The "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar enables students from high schools throughout Madigan's legislative district to meet with elected officials, members of the state's executive branch, and representatives of special-interest groups and the news media for a day of panel discussions providing insights into the workings of state government.

The Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship is open to high school students who attend the annual seminar at Penn College and who subsequently enroll as full-time students at the college. The scholarship award may be used to help defray the costs of tuition, fees, books, tools and other required supplies.
