'Cat TalesMen's Basketball Ryan Scott (Dallastown) scored 17 points, Jameel McAfee (Williamsport) had 15 and Matt Michaels (Williamsport) added 14 as the Wildcats completed a season series sweep at Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
On Wednesday, Penn College closed out its season with a win over Penn State Scranton that not only avenged an early-season loss at Scranton, but gave the Wildcats their longest win streak of the campaign at three games. McAfee scored 23 points while Tom Little (Beacon Falls, Conn.) added 13 and Michaels 11. Both Little and Joe Simon (Renovo) pulled down eight rebounds.
For the season, Simon led the team in scoring with 332 points and a 12.8-points-per-game average. Scott averaged 10.3 points and Craig Flint (Port Allegany) 10.2. Teamwise, the Wildcats scored an average of 68.7 points per game and allowed 83.1 per outing.
"Any other team that would have been 3-20 going into that last week of play would have quit a long time ago. We went out and won three in a row because they played hard all 26 games this year," coach Gene Bruno said.
"(Now) it's my job to go out and get some help as far as our size. If we would have had one big man, we definitely would have been in the playoffs and would have had a better season," he continued.
Assessing the campaign, the coach said, "They just never quit playing. They were fun to watch. ... We played good basketball. We hung with teams that we had no business to be with, and that's a compliment to the players how hard they play."
Women's BasketballIn their regular-season finale, the Lady Wildcats rolled over Penn State Scranton. Brittany Blessard (Renovo) scored 25 points and Amy Fassett (Ulster) added 19. Penn College will host Penn State Hazleton in the semifinals of the Penn State University Athletic Conference at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The two teams split during the regular season.
Men's VolleyballAgainst Lock Haven, Penn College opened a 15-4 lead in the first game and that, according to coach Wes Strayer, did more harm than good. "We got a little overconfident," he said afterward. The Wildcats held on to win the first game, but dropped the second before rallying to win the last two, including a decisive victory in the final game.
On Saturday, the Wildcats swept all seven games during two matches: three against Kutztown and four against Penn State Abington.
