ArcheryIf senior archer Michelle Wright ends the season anything like she started it, great things may be in store for the already two-time All-American.
Wright, of Kendall, N.Y., broke her own state female collegiate compound record of a year ago during the college's first meet of the season at the Pennsylvania Indoor Championships Feb. 3 in Taylor with a score of 570. Last year, Wright shot a 564 and that eclipsed by two points the previous state collegiate indoor record set in 2005 by former Penn College archer Karen Morse of Canton.
"She shot really well. With Michelle shooting and breaking her own record, it was really impressive to see her do that. She should do really well this year," Penn College coach Chad Karstetter said.
Behind Wright was Sarah Wilson (Tyrone), who finished second, and Lindsey Fackler, who was third.
In collegiate male compound competition, Ryan Rambo (Millville) was first with 573 points, Brock Smith (Brookville) third, Jarrod Chandler (Gillett) fourth, Brad Ferguson (Lewistown) fifth, Shawn Tappen (Wellsville) sixth, Nate Potteiger (Middletown) seventh and Martin Smith (Brookville) eighth. Although there was no official team competition, Penn College had 1,693 points overall and Penn State 1,560.
"They shot really well. They're going to make a pretty strong team this year," Karstetter said.
In collegiate male recurve competition, Chris Adams (Pen Argyl) finished second, Mark Lambert (Venus) third, Jason Kornbau (Felton) fourth and James Fanelli (Glastonburg, Conn.) sixth. Although unofficial, Penn College had 1,554 team points and Penn State 1,471.
"Everybody improved a lot; everybody increased their scores from last year's opener. Not only are they shooting and looking better, their scores are really starting to show. Hopefully, it's a good sign for the year that we are starting out this early with these kinds of scores," Karstetter said.
Men's VolleyballAfter splitting four matches at the 12-team Terrapin Invitational in College Park, Md., Penn College coach Wes Strayer said, "Everybody understands what they have to do (to win). The Wildcats opened with victories over Appalachian State (25-16, 25-22) and Duke (24-26, 25-18, 16-14) before losses to Maryland A (19-25, 25-21, 12-15) and Messiah (23-25, 16-25). In the first game against Maryland, Penn College led 17-12 before falling and in the first game against Messiah it also held 4- and 5-point leads before losing. "Our passing and defense let us down," Strayer lamented afterward.
