A short story by an associate professor of technical communication and literature at Pennsylvania College of Technology has been selected for inclusion in an anthology of Southwestern stories.
"The Fifth Daughter," written by Charles F. Kemnitz, is based on research funded by the National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Creative Nonfiction, which Kemnitz earned in 2004. Kemnitz researched the stories of residents of the Navajo and Ute Mountain American Indian reservations who are dealing with illnesses that stem from uranium mining in the region.
Originally published in the Winter 2005 issue of South Dakota Review, a national literary, scholarly journal published by the University of South Dakota, "The Fifth Daughter" has also been selected for inclusion in the anthology publication "Best Stories of the Southwest: 2007," edited by D. Seth Horton.
Kemnitz holds master's and bachelor's degrees from Tulsa University. He has been published more than 150 times in major literary journals and has earned national writing awards. He has been teaching at Penn College for more than 13 years.
