'Cat Tales Men's BasketballAgainst Penn State DuBois, the first of four straight home games, a slow start proved costly at the end for the Wildcats. Penn State DuBois opened with a 16-1 run and led by as many as 22 points before Penn College trimmed it to 55-42 at the half. Late in the second half, Joe Simon (Renovo), Ryan Scott (York) and Jameel McAfee (Williamsport) hit key shots that pulled the Wildcats within three, but they could get no closer. "We lost, but we outplayed them with hustle and desire," Wildcat coach Gene Bruno said. Simon and McAfee each scored 20 points, while Scott finished with 15.
Simon scored a personal season-high 30 points, including three three-point goals and hitting nine-of-10 foul shots, in a loss against Penn State Delaware. Scott and McAfee finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively, for Penn College. The Wildcats trailed 46-28 at the half, but a pair of three-pointers by Simon and one by Scott with about seven minutes to play helped slice the difference to five, but that was as close as they could get.
Craig Flint (Port Allegany) had the hot hand Saturday against Penn State York as he hit seven three-point goals and finished with 28 points as Penn College snapped a nine-game streak of losses. The Wildcats led by as many as 20 points twice, but Penn State York trimmed it to seven with about three minutes remaining before Anthony Sofranek (Newport) hit two key three-pointers to help secure the win. Tom Little (Beacon Falls, Conn.) added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Penn College while Simon had 13 points and Matt Michaels (Williamsport) had 12.
Women's BasketballNorthampton County Community College raced to a 44-17 halftime lead against Penn College at Northampton and the Lady Wildcats could never catch up. Amanda Ault (Milan) led Penn College in scoring with 15 points and Erin Mahoney (Linesville) added 10.
In a loss against Penn State Delaware, Amanda Turner (Brackney) was the top scorer with 15 points while Amy Fassett (Ulster) added 12 and Brittany Blessard (Renovo) scored 11.
At NCAA Division III Lincoln University, Ault scored 22 points and grabbed 14 caroms in a loss.
The Lady Wildcats rebounded Saturday, however, beating Penn State York at home and snapping a three-game string of defeats in the process. Mahoney and Fassett each scored 17 points while Meagan Morris (Herndon, Va.) and Ault chipped in with 13 points apiece.
