Shawn Sidey, a 1996 Penn College graduate who earned degrees in culinary arts and food and hospitality management, returned to campus Nov. 17 to talk with students about coffee roasting. Sidey, trained as a chef, decided after several years of restaurant and catering management positions, to pursue his joy for coffee as a career. After managing three stores in a cafe chain called Brew HaHa! and becoming roaster for Morning Star Coffee, he took a position as a roaster at Starbucks Coffee Co.'s largest roasting plant. He is now a roasting supervisor at the plant, located in York. He talked with students about how beans are processed from field to packaging, about Starbucks' operations and about the business of selling coffee. Students sampled coffee and tea blends.
