'Cat TalesBaseball With two postponements due to wet grounds, there was more frustration than anything for the baseball team, but it won the one game it played. The Wildcats got off to a 10-1 lead in its Penn State University Athletic Conference opener against Penn State Scranton, then held on at the finish. "Mark Shaffer (Hanover), our starting pitcher, did a good job. He gave up a run over four innings. And Alex Hague (Lansdale) came in at the end and did an excellent job for 3 1/3," coach Chris Howard said. On offense, James Woodring (Waynesboro) led the way.

Cross CountryStepping into Penn State University Athletic Conference action for the first time this season, the Wildcat men finished first among five teams and the Wildcat women second in a three-team field. For the men, Greg Kammerle (Willow Grove) finished first over the 5-mile course in 28:28 and Dan LaSota (Lake Ariel) was second in 29:13. For the Penn College women, Tracey Brewbaker (Middletown) was third over the 3.1-mile course in 22:17.

GolfThe Wildcats dominated an eight-team field in their opener at the White Deer Golf Course and, in doing so, extended their four-season win streak to 107-0. Wildcat Tony Stopper (Jersey Shore) took medalist honors with a 73. Five other Penn College golfers also were among the top nine individuals with Gilbert Balliet (Watsontown) and Matt Winder (Montgomery) tied for third (76), Craig Flint (Port Allegany) fifth (78), T.C. Reynolds (Muncy) eighth (79) and Shaun McQuay (Watsontown) ninth (80). In team scoring, the Wildcats' scored a 304 and Penn State Mont Alto was second with 322.

Women's VolleyballThings couldn't have gone better in the team's season opener against Penn State Scranton, as the Lady Wildcats took all three games and limited Penn State Scranton to 10 total points. Penn College had a 100-percent serving record, including a team-record 27 of 27 by Liz Mast (Morgantown) during one game. Fourteen of her serves were aces. Also, Maria McNett (Canton) was 15 of 15 on her serves, with eight aces, and freshman Courtney Worthington (Liberty) 13 of 13, with seven aces. Penn College won its second match, as well, beating Penn State Schuylkill in three games. In a busy weekend that saw it play four matches in two days, the Lady Wildcats took all four to remain unbeaten. In Sunday's outings, highlights were great serving by Maria McNett, Worthington and Mast, and outstanding defense from Sara Gamble (Ulysses) and Maria Bova (Bethlehem).

Men's SoccerPenn College won its opener against Penn State Wilkes-Barre with goals coming from Renny Walker (Lewisburg), Stephen Lis (Elliotsburg) and Zach Yoder (Newville), but it was his team's double-overtime tie against crosstown rival NCAA Division III Lycoming College that first-year coach Enrique Castillo was most excited about. "We had a lot of heart and we played tough," he said. "I almost had a heart attack because we had so many chances to finish it (in overtime)." Yoder gave Penn College the early lead against Lycoming before the visiting Warriors went ahead 2-1 in the second half. The Wildcats tied the match late in the second half on a penalty kick by Abdullah Al-Bahrani (Saudi Arabia), but neither team could capitalize in the overtime periods. "It was quite a game. It was an exciting game," Castillo said. The Penn College coach's assessment after two games: "We're starting to get used to each other, the way we play, (however), we have to work on finishing; to put teams away."
