The Maxine Stiffler/Lycoming County Paralegal Associate Scholarship Fund will provide an annual award of $250 to a student in the third or fourth year of Penn College's bachelor-degree major in legal assistant/paralegal studies.

Successful applicants must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0. Preference will be given to nontraditional students, and part-time students are eligible to apply.

Maxine L. Stiffler is a 1996 graduate of Penn College's associate-degree major in legal assistant/paralegal studies. She continued studies toward the bachelor's degree, but health problems have thus far prevented her from finishing.

Stiffler serves on Penn College's legal assistant/paralegal studies program advisory committee.

Rebecca Buttorf, another Penn College alumna and president of the Lycoming County Paralegal Association, said the group established the scholarship to honor Stiffler for her determination in life and her dedication to the paralegal profession.

"She is a remarkably strong-willed woman," Buttorf said.

"It's very humbling. I can't think of a better way to honor me," said Stiffler. "Education has always been, and continues to be, very important to me."

The Lycoming County Paralegal Association was established in 1995 to promote the paralegal profession. The group conducts educational seminars and fosters better communication in the legal field. The association also conducts an annual outreach activity, usually with a focus on youth programs. Many of the association's 27 current members are Penn College alumni.

Penn College offers an American Bar Association-approved bachelor's degree in legal assistant/paralegal studies and an associate degree in legal assistant/paralegal.
