Noncredit Programs at Penn College Offer Health-Career Training

Noncredit career training for several professions in the health-care field is being offered through Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
WDCE offers noncredit programs in radiology editor, medical language editor/specialist and medical assistant.
Radiology Editor The radiology editor program includes 120 hours of classroom and hands-on learning and 120 hours of internship experience. Radiology editors interpret and edit dictation by radiologists, providing legal documentation of radiologic/diagnostic data and facilitating the delivery of clinical decision-making, patient care and reimbursement. The training focuses on state-of-the-art speech recognition technology.
Prerequisites include a demonstrated working use of the English language, typing speed of 50 words per minute, and the ability to hear and understand spoken language. Candidates below the minimum typing speed have the opportunity to take a keyboarding class prior to enrolling. Successful completion of a basic entry-level skills test is necessary prior to acceptance.
Medical Language Editor/Specialist The medical language editor/specialist program includes 780 hours of classroom and hands-on learning and 240 hours of internship experience. Medical language editors interpret, edit and transcribe dictation by physicians and other health-care professionals, providing legal documentation of medical care and facilitating the delivery of health-care services and the reimbursement process. Training focuses on state-of-the-art speech recognition technology. Participants may sit for the Registered Medical Transcriptionist exam under development by the American Association for Medical Transcription.

Medical AssistantThe medical assistant program features classroom and laboratory instruction preparing participants to perform general administrative, receptionist and basic clinical procedures in doctor?s offices, clinics, medical facilities and human-service agencies. Medical assistants work primarily in outpatient settings, keeping offices and clinics running smoothly. The Registered Medical Assistant credential is offered by the American Medical Technologists. Topics for this program include orientation, employment outlook, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, communication, ethics, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy.
