Friday, May 19, 2006
Two students from the South Williamsport Area School District are the latest recipients of awards from a scholarship established at Pennsylvania College of Technology to honor the memory of the late wife of state Sen. Roger A. Madigan, a member of the college's board of directors.
Jennifer C. Berrios and Andrea L. Hetner, both seniors at South Williamsport Area High School, were selected to receive the Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship awards for 2006.
The scholarship is open to high school students who attend Sen. Madigan's annual "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar at Penn College and subsequently enroll as full-time students at the college.
Berrios will enter Penn College this fall and major in mass media communication. Hetner begins her studies this fall in the college's physician assistant major.
The Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship may be used to help defray the costs of tuition, fees, books, tools and other required supplies. Applicants are required to write an essay describing the community service they have performed and the value that service has added to the community.
Berrios has spent many hours volunteering and raising money for worthy causes through her school and church by way of the Leo Club, Teen Contact, Antioch Baptist Church Youth Group and the Key Club.
Hetner has spent much time raising money and volunteering for community health organizations. She has also participated in highway-cleanup projects, teaching children the importance of bicycle safety, coaching girls' basketball, and increasing awareness of drug and alcohol abuse.
"Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar enables students from high schools throughout Madigan's legislative district to meet with elected officials, members of the state's executive branch, representatives of special-interest groups and the news media for a day of panel discussions providing insights into the workings of state government.
