Elementary-School Pupils to Celebrate 'Earth Day' at Penn College

About 100 elementary-school pupils, teachers and chaperones from the Montgomery Area School District will visit Pennsylvania College of Technology's Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood in celebration of "Earth Day" on April 20.
Seniors in the Forest Recreation class within the college's School of Natural Resources Management will host more than a dozen stations that depict some aspect of forestry or the environment, and the young guests a combined group from Montgomery and Elimsport elementary schools will walk the campus' beautiful nature trails during their four-hour visit.
Students from the Earth Science Center, a spacious "living laboratory" 10 miles south of the college's main campus in Williamsport, annually join area youngsters in an "Earth Day" celebration. Last year, they set up information displays at Elimsport Elementary School, ranging from tree-planting and seed dispersal to soil erosion and firefighting.
"This will be a great opportunity for the students to showcase their skills and knowledge," said Dennis F. Ringling, professor of forestry in the School of Natural Resources Management. "I always say that, if they understand the concept or skill, they should be able to explain it to another individual so that they understand it."
