'Cat Tales Baseball Penn College came out hot in its season opener, beating Cornell (East Iowa) College, 11-3, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Phil Woodring (Waynesboro) led the Wildcats' 12-hit offense by going 4-for-4 with one run batted in and two runs scored. Other multiple hitters were Mike Daciw (Sun Valley), who was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and Cody Lytle (Warrior Run), who was 2-for-2 with one RBI. Tai Mitchell homered and drove in a pair of runs. Austin Upright (Montoursville) got the win in relief of Jordan Staib (Williamsport).
Against John Jay, Staib's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Wildcats to victory. In the game, James Craft (Central York) and Devon Liquori (Hawley) each went 3-for-4 at the plate, Ryan Eshleman (Penn Manor) went 2-for-3 and Phil Woodring went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Penn College rapped out 16 hits.
In a doubleheader win over Anna Maria, during which the Wildcats rapped out 30 hits and scored an equal number of runs, Liquori went 5-for-6 at the plate and Phil Woodring 5-for-7. Liquori and Ryan Stuart (Emporium) each hit home runs.
Facing Rochester, Mich., Penn College continued to slug the ball well, hammering 21 hits, but suffered its first two losses of the season. In the first game of the twin bill, James Woodring (Waynesboro) went 4-for-4 at the plate. Daciw went 5-for-8 on the day.
Wrapping up an eight-game season-opening trip to Florida, the Wildcats split against SUNY Ithaca (N.Y.).
"The trip was 200-percent successful," said coach Rees Daneker. "The kids played hard. Our hitting was excellent. Our fielding was good. Our pitching needs a little more work, but it's all coming together."
