'Cat TalesWomen's BasketballLed by 1-2 scoring punch of Katlyn Stupar (State College) and Brittany Blessard (Renovo), the Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 41-23 halftime lead against Penn State York on Friday and went on to win by 25 points and advance to the Penn State University Athletic Conference championship against Penn State Harrisburg. Stupar scored 26 points, increasing her career total at the college to 960, and Blessard added 25. Also scoring in double figures for Penn College was Sarah Mehlman (North Schuylkill), who added 12 points. Defending conference champ Penn State York bowed out with a 14-6 overall record.
In Saturday's title game, Stupar, in a fitting end to her career, hit a pair of foul shots with two-tenths of a second left to lift the team to victory and the championship. Stupar finished the season with 472 points and had 998 in her two-year career. Blessard added 10 points in the finale and had 367 for the season (13.6 average). Teamwise, the Wildcats averaged 66.9 points on offense for the year and allowed 60.7. The 19 wins equaled a school record set during the 1998-99 season.
Archery Michelle Wright (Kendall, N.Y.) finished second in the women's compound event at the Virginia Indoor State Championships on Feb. 25 in Manassas, Va.
BaseballPenn College came out hot in its season opener, beating Cornell (East Iowa) College, 11-3, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Phil Woodring (Waynesboro) led the Wildcats' 12-hit offense by going 4-for-4 with one run batted in and two runs scored. Other multiple hitters were Mike Daciw (Sun Valley), who was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and Cody Lytle (Warrior Run), who was 2-for-2 with one RBI. Tai Mitchell homered and drove in a pair of runs. Austin Upright (Montoursville) got the win in relief of Jordan Staib (Williamsport).
