Beginning Monday, Internet access to employee and student e-mail accounts and network drives will require the use of Web pages that encrypt login information or software configured to use a secure connection. Encryption enhances network security by preventing unauthorized electronic snooping of user IDs and passwords. (The effective date was extended by Information Technology Services.)
These changes DO NOT affect access to GroupWise or network drives when logged in to the College network from office or laboratory computers.
The changes to security protocols will affect four types of remote account access:
- E-mail Access Through Web Browsers Students and employees who access their e-mail through a Web browser must log in through the Webmail starting page.
- E-mail Access Through POP3/IMAP Software Students and employees who use a POP3/IMAP-based e-mail client program (such as Microsoft Outlook Express) to access their college e-mail from off campus must configure the e-mail client program to use a secure connection. Instructions for setting up a secure connection with Outlook Express are available on the ITS Web site in the Document Library. Those using other software packages can use those instructions to identify the proper incoming and outgoing mail servers and configuration settings. (Note that the settings for employees and students are different.)
- Network Drive Access Through Web Browsers Students and employees who access their network drives from a Web browser must log in through the secure site here.
- Network Drive Access Through FTP Software Students and employees who use FTP software to access their network drives remotely must use an FTP client program that supports secure file transmission. Instructions for installing and configuring a secure FTP client are available on the ITS Web site in the Document Library.
Students needing assistance with any of the changes mentioned in this announcement can get help from the Student Help Desk in ATHS, Room E204. Employees should contact the Employee Help Desk at ext. 7329.
