'Cat TalesMen's BasketballMatt Melusky (Minersville) scored 17 points and brothers Tony and Craig Flint (Port Allegany) added 14 each as the Wildcats outdid Penn State Harrisburg.
In a hard-fought battle against Penn State McKeesport that could have given the Wildcats a share of first place in the Penn State University-Athletic Conference, Penn College forged a 42-40 halftime lead before falling in the second half when Melusky and Tom Little (Woodland Regional, Conn.) fouled out. Tony Flint finished with 21 points for the Wildcats and Melusky added 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The loss snapped a three-game Penn College win streak.
Women's BasketballPlaying up against NCAA Division III College Misericordia, Penn College forged a 28-25 halftime lead, but after that it was pretty much all Misericordia as it outscored the Lady Wildcats 54-15 in the second half. Katlyn Stupar (State College) scored 12 points for Penn College before fouling out. Brittany Blessard (Renovo) added 10 points.
The Lady Wildcats garnered their second win of the season against an NCAA Division III team by beating Alfred (N.Y.) University in overtime. Amy Fassett (Athens) hit a key 3-point shot in the OT to spark the win. Sarah Mehlman (North Schuylkill) led Penn College scorers with 18 points before fouling out. Stupar added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Returning to Penn State University-Athletic Conference action at Penn State Harrisburg, Stupar poured in a personal season-high 31 points while grabbing 14 rebounds, coming up with six steals and dishing out two assists. Blessard added 18 points in the win and Mehlman scored 12.
The Lady Wildcats closed out a busy four-game week, in which they won three, by beating Penn State Schuylkill to remain unbeaten in the PSU-AC. Great defense and offensive balance were the keys as five Lady Wildcats scored in double figures: Mehlman had 17 points, Fassett had 16, Stupar and Natali Plavi (Elderton) had 12 each and Blessard had 11. Fassett also came up with five steals and Rose Crowell (Temple Hills, Md.) pulled down seven rebounds.
