Douglas B. Martin, a student at Pennsylvania College of Technology, has received the John A. Savoy Scholarship for Electronics Applications for the 2005-06 academic year.
The scholarship is awarded each fall to a second-year student in an electronics major that emphasizes laser optics or fiber optics. The recipient is chosen based on scholastic achievement, dedication and leadership.
Martin, of Gap, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in electronics engineering technology. He is a member of the Penn College student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Campus Crusade for Christ.
He attributes his scholarship award in part to his grade-point average and award-winning projects.
As a student at Pequea Valley High School and a member of its Technology Student Association chapter, Martin entered electronic design prototype competitions in his junior and senior years. In his junior year, he built a wireless motion detector. In his senior year, he built a laser communication link that earned him first-place finishes in both regional and state competition. The state win qualified him for national competition in Nashville, Tenn., where he placed 10th in the nation.
