Civil Engineering/Surveying Student Earns Four Scholarships
Monday, December 5, 2005
Pennsylvania College of Technology student Austin M. Upright has been awarded four separate scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year.
Upright, Montoursville, plans to graduate in May 2006 with associate degrees in civil engineering technology and surveying technology. In May 2005, he earned an associate degree from Penn College in computer-aided drafting technology.
He received the Larson Design Group/Robert W. Ferrell Jr. Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded each fall to a civil engineering technology or surveying technology student, with preference given to a second-year student with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or above. The student must be a Pennsylvania resident, with first preference given to Lycoming County residents.
Upright also received the William D. Davis Scholarship, which is awarded each fall to a resident of Lycoming County. Applicants are asked to provide evidence of organization activity, academic achievement, citizenship and leadership.
For placing first in the state SkillsUSA competition in technical drafting last spring, Upright received a SkillsUSA scholarship and earned a spot in the national championship in Kansas City, Mo., where he placed fifth among students from around the nation. The scholarship is awarded each fall to students who placed first, second or third in the Pennsylvania competition.
He also earned a scholarship from the Pennsylvania Land Surveyors Foundation, a division of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors. The foundation awards scholarships annually to Pennsylvania land-surveying students who are outstanding scholars, students and citizens and are pursuing a bachelor's degree or associate degree in land surveying.
Upright pitches for the Penn College baseball team and works as a computer-aided drafting operator for Textron Lycoming's manufacturing engineering department.
After graduation, he hopes to combine his drafting, civil engineering and surveying degrees to enter the field of digital terrain modeling.
