'Cat TalesMen's Soccer In the Penn State University Athletic Conference semifinal match at Harrisburg, Brendan Kemmerer (Faith Christian Academy), Shane Fuller (Northeastern) and Jochen Stein (Hamburg, Germany) scored goals and freshman goalie Tristan Wertman (Warrior Run) made it stand up as the Wildcats reversed the score of their previous match against Penn State Harrisburg and advanced to the conference championship against Penn State Hazleton.

Penn College closed out its league season in grand fashion, getting second-half goals from Stein on a feed from Fuller and John Swope (East Pennsboro) and another standout effort in goal from Wertman to blank Penn State Hazleton and capture its first PSUAC championship.

This marked the second year in a row that Penn College has won a championship. Last season, it captured titles in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference, Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Conference and Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference, the latter the forerunner to the PSUAC.

Playing an NCAA Division III team and without its regular goalie Penn College dropped its final match of the season to crosstown rival Lycoming College. Fuller put the Wildcats on the scoreboard first, but, after that, it was all Lycoming.

Women's VolleyballIn the season-ending Penn State University Athletic Conference championship tournament, Penn College breezed through its first two matches Saturday, dumping Penn State Wilkes-Barre, 30-7, 30-13, and Penn State Schuylkill, 30-6, 30-20.

The Lady Wildcats then beat Penn State Mont Alto, 30-14, 30-28, to assure themselves a spot in Sunday's final four, although they lost their final match of the day to nemesis Penn State Fayette, 30-18, 28-30, 14-16.

On Sunday, Penn College opened with a semifinal win over Penn State York, 30-25, 30-23, then handed Penn State Fayette its first loss of the year, 30-20, 30-28, to force an "if" match in the double-elimination tournament. In that match, Fayette won, 30-23, 30-23.

"Kudos to the entire team for playing their hearts out," said coach Bambi Hawkins, who is in her sixth year at the helm of the Wildcats.

Hawkins cited the individual defensive play of Maria Bova (Bethlehem Catholic) and dominating front-row play of Johncie Clark (Chestnut Ridge) and Courtney Eisenhofer (Schuylkill Valley).

Also contributing to the second-place finish, and playing their final match for Penn College, were Erin Pillar (Youngsville), Amber Geckle (Indian Valley) and Sara Gamble (Northern Potter).

"I don't think I can find the words to describe the intense emotions that were felt by all our ladies," she said. "(They) truly played their hearts out in the championship match.

"Two tough wins in a row just depleted the stores of energy for the final match, but this team enjoyed playing together so much that the tears at the end were due to the fact that some ladies won't be returning next year... rather than the more typical tears of disappointment for taking second place," Hawkins added.
