'Cat Tales Cross Country Tom Lambert (Bangor) won the individual Penn State University Athletic Conference championship in a time of 28:02 and led the Wildcat men to their third straight conference championship and fourth in five years under coach Mike Paulhamus.
"He had a real run. He dominated the race from start to finish," said Paulhamus.
"He worked hard. As soon as my practices were over, he would run another four, five or six miles on his won. He was dedicated. He had a goal that he wanted to achieve this year. He put 110 percent behind it," Paulhamus said of his sophomore runner.
Penn College finished with 37 points, followed by Penn State Schuylkill, 61; Penn State DuBois, 70; Penn State Scranton, 85; Penn State Mont Alto, 113; and Penn State Harrisburg, 125.
Individually for the Penn College men, John Zaginaylo (Columbia-Montour) was fifth over a 5-mile course in 29:09, Dan LaSota (Western Wayne) was 10th in 30:32, Ryan O'Connor (Southwest Central, N.Y.) was 13th 30:45, Chad Hunsberger (Pottsgrove) was 23rd in 32:22, Devon Luckabaugh (Dallastown) was 24th in 32:48, Ben Myers (Hempfield) was 33rd in 34:06, Mike Womelsdorf (Allentown) was 39th in 37:47 and Patrick Wisinski (Erie) was 41st in 38:42.
"We just blew everyone away. Everybody on the team brought their "A" game," said Paulhamus.
This season, the Penn College men were 19-0 in PSUAC meets and are 52-0 in conference meets over the past three seasons, having won 12 straight conference invitationals during that span.
"Of all my coaching jobs, this (year) was one of my toughest because when we came in I had only two starters back, so basically it was a rebuilding year. Everybody came in and worked hard and they made themselves into a champion," Paulhamus said.
On the women's side, the Lady Wildcats had 35 points and finished second to Penn State DuBois, which had 20 points.
Lindsey Edwards (Williamsport) placed fourth over a 3.1-mile course in 23:58, Shannon Gibble (Coudersport) was sixth in 24:55, Angela Valentine (Tamaqua) was eighth in 25:54 and Tracey Seyler of Chambersburg was 10 th in 26:28.
Men's Soccer Everything was clicking during the week for the Wildcats, as they won three matches and outscored their opponents, 22-1.
Women's Soccer A tough season ended with a 2-1 loss to Luzerne County Community College in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship game, but there is hope for the future.
"After a very trying season in the league with a lot of teams dropping out (the EPCC began with five teams and finished with two), the final game was extremely well played," said Mike Stanzione, Penn College athletic director. "The competition was there and the hope is that the league will become stronger next year so that we have at least four teams."
When the Lady Wildcats and Luzerne met earlier in the season, Luzerne won, 10-1. According to Stanzione, there were two key elements to the gap being narrowed between then and the title match.
"One, the girls had more time to jell, to get used to playing soccer together. And another big thing was that in the first match we didn't have our goalie Kim Carbaugh (Northern Lebanon), she was not out for the team at that point. Those two things made us a much more competitive team," Stanzione said.
Despite finishing with a 2-5-1 overall record, Stanzione said, "We ended up on a real positive note which was really good for the women."
Women's Volleyball The Lady Wildcats closed out their regular season with a frustrating five-game loss to Penn State Fayette, winning the first two games, 30-22 and 30-13, then losing the next three, 27-30, 28-30 and 11-15.
Courtney Eisenhofer (Schuylkill Valley) had 14 kills and eight blocks, Johncie Clark (Chestnut Ridge) had 15 kills and five blocks, Natali Plavi (Elderton) had 14 kills, Sara Gamble (Northern Potter) three aces and 10 digs and Maria Bova (Bethlehem Catholic) 20 digs.
In the Penn State University Athletic Conference West Division semifinals, Penn College beat Penn State DuBois, 20-30, 30-22, 30-25 and 30-21. Melani Grady (Youngsville) had 46 assists and five kills, Clark eight kills and five blocks, Eisenhofer 18 kills and five blocks, Liz Mast (Twin Valley) five kills and two aces, Plavi eight kills and two aces and Maria McNett (Canton) nine digs.
In the West Division final against top-seeded Penn State Fayette, the Wildcats fell, 26-30, 27-30 and 31-33. Grady had 20 assists and two aces, Mast five kills and two aces and Clark seven kills and seven blocks.
Saturday, the Lady Wildcats will compete with 10 other teams in the end-of-the-season conference tournament.
