'Cat Tales Baseball The Penn College bats were blazing in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Scranton. Dave Miller (Pen Argyl) went 6-for-8 (3-for-4 in each game) to lead a 35-hit attack. Wildcat pitching was tough, too, as Nate Hill (Loyalsock Township) and Chris Jones (Penn Hills) combined on a one-hitter in the nightcap.
Against Penn State Fayette, Christian Worth (Williamsport) went the seven-inning distance in the opener to get his third win on the mound and, in the second game, Austin Upright (Montoursville) also went seven innings for his third victory. Jordan Richert (Pine Grove) went 2-for-4 at the plate in each game.
Thus far in the season, with at least 30 at-bats, Phil Woodring (Waynesboro) leads the team in hitting with a .714 batting average and 16 runs batted in. Next is Miller at 543, James Woodring (Waynesboro) .457 and Ryan Eshleman (Penn Manor) .385. On the mound, Hill has a 1.17 earned run average and is 3-1, Worth has a 1.52 ERA and is 3-1, and Upright has a 2.71 ERA and is 3-0.
Cross Country Tom Lambert (Bangor) finished first in meets at Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, with times of 28:08 and 28:14, respectively, to lead the men's team to victories. In women's action at Scranton, Lindsey Edwards (Williamsport) finished first in 25:08 and the Lady Wildcats placed second in team competition.
At the Spiked Shoe Invitational at State College, Lambert was the top Penn College men's runner, finishing 132nd in a 188-runner field and Edwards was the leading Wildcat women's runner, placing 190 out of 201. "My guys were tired (in the State College event). We ran three meets in a week and it showed. But it was a good learning experience," said Mike Paulhamus, Penn College coach.
Women's Soccer After losing their first four matches, the Penn College women got a victory against Penn State Abington.
Men's Soccer In recording their second win of the season, at Penn State Mont Alto, Brendan Kemmerer (Faith Christian) had a goal and assist.
Coed Tennis With the addition of Krystal Sheredos (Bangor) to the team, Penn College defeated Penn State Mont Alto for its only win of the season thus far.
Women's Volleyball Home wins over Penn State Beaver (30-15, 30-0, 30-0) and Penn State New Kensington (30-23, 30-13, 30-25) hiked the Wildcats' win streak to four matches before they fell to three tough opponents in a weekend tournament at Lycoming College. There, they lost to Marywood (30-21, 30-15, 30-26), Penn State Behrend (30-11, 30-22, 30-12) and Lycoming (30-13, 30-25, 30-12).
Against Penn State Beaver, Penn College led 24-15 in the first game when a Beaver player was injured and it had to forfeit the rest of the way. Against New Kensington, Maria McNett (Canton) had three aces on 19-of-19 serving, Liz Mast (Twin Valley) had 10 kills and four blocks at the net, and Amber Geckle (Indian Valley) had 22 assists and four aces.
In the Lycoming tourney against Marywood, Mast had 100-percent serving with six aces, Courtney Eisenhofer (Schuylkill Valley) had six kills and Maria Bova (Bethlehem Catholic) 20 digs. Against Penn State Behrend, Jamie Baxendell (Jamestown) was 100 percent on her hits with three kills, and, against Lycoming, Melani Grady (Youngsville) had eight assists; Eisenhofer, four aces; and Johncie Clark (Chestnut Ridge) and Karla Neiman (New Oxford) each had three kills.
GolfPenn College bettered four other teams at Penn State Mont Alto to increase its three-season win streak to 94-0. Matt Haile (Sunbury) and Shaun McQuay (Watsontown) each shot 79 for the Wildcats.
