Adam C. Barilla, a sophomore in the plastics and polymer engineering technology major at Pennsylvania College of Technology, was named the recipient of the Frazier Family Scholarship for Fall 2005.
Barilla, of Strong, carries a 3.91 grade-point average and is a member of Penn College's student chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
Barilla is the first recipient of the scholarship, donated by Thomas A. and Marilyn H. Frazier, which will be awarded each year to a second-year student in the plastics and polymer technology associate-degree major or the plastics and polymer engineering technology bachelor-degree major.
"It really pleases me to know that Adam is this year's recipient of the Frazier Family Scholarship," said Kirk M. Cantor, professor of plastics technology at Penn College. "He is certainly one of the more deserving students of this award. I enjoy having him in class because he always brings a great attitude with his intelligence and strong work ethic."
Barilla is also a Penn College Presidential Scholar, chosen for his academic excellence and community service in high school. As such, he serves as a student ambassador, representing Penn College in a variety of on- and off-campus outreach activities.
He is a graduate of Mount Carmel Area High School and is considering pursuing a post-graduate education after he earns his degree from Penn College. He is interested in working in research and development.
Barilla said his plastics education thus far at Penn College has been "very personal."
"Even on the first day of lab, you don't just watch. You actually get involved," he said.
