College West Residents Collect More Than 1,300 Pounds of Recyclables
Sunday, May 1, 2005
College West's "Track Your Trash" recycling program held a final weigh-in this past Tuesday.
The program, run by Resident Assistants Patrick Butler and Erin Scott, collected 1,367 pounds of recycled materials from 12 separate apartments throughout the complex from February to April.
A survey of all College West residents was done during the Fall 2004 semester to determine if a recycling program was something of interest among residents. The response was large, and it was noted that several apartments had already been collecting recyclables and transporting them to the drop-off site on West Third Street.
RAs Patrick and Erin facilitated the weigh-in by recording the total amounts of materials from each apartment, then transporting the recyclables to the drop-off site.
The participating residents were given bins in which to collect materials, then were asked to bring their recyclables to the courtyard to be weighed once a month. Participation in the competition increased as the months went by, and, in the end, the winning apartment had collected 351 pounds!
For their effort, each member of the winning apartment was awarded a $50 gift certificate to the Lycoming Mall.
The winning residents, from Clinton Hall, are:David Kelly, Jermaine Mitchell, Cory Pekarski and Jonathan Schutz.
The first runners-up, weighing in at 343 pounds of recyclables, were Kaitlyn Charmbury, Cynthia Kuerner and Jill Purificato of Delaware Hall.
