ITS, FCC Clear Up Misconception About Cellphone Telemarketers
Monday, April 25, 2005
Concerned employees with college-owned cellphones inadvertently are sharing misinformation, based on an e-mail message alleging that cellphone companies are selling customer's numbers to telemarketers. The message misinterprets a news item about cellphone companies creating a telephone directory of cellphone numbers – a directory that would be for consumer use, not telemarketers, and which would not be sold to any third party. In fact, Federal Communications Commission legislation prohibits telemarketers from calling cellphones.
