Campus Community Welcome at Engineering 'Professional Awareness' Conference

Pennsylvania College of Technology's student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers will host a Student Professional Awareness Conference at the college on April 22.

The conference, which is planned for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Klump Academic Center auditorium, will include national and local speakers. An agenda and background on the presenters have been issued by the School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies.

The IEEE introduced S-PACs in 1979 to increase engineering students' professional awareness and to help them learn from the experience of successful engineers. Because engineers have a responsibility to society, S-PACs explore the subjects, other than technical knowledge, that affect engineers' careers.

Scheduled speakers at the Penn College event include Lowell McCaw, professor emeritus and past president of the Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society, on the importance of a professional society; Jim Watson, professional engineer, on ethics shades of gray; Shahvano (Moni) Syeda, engineering manager, Corning Inc., on working and the interview process; Chris Brantley, managing director of IEEE-USA, on engineering and public policy; Merrill W. Buckley, engineer, technical manager and educator, on practical aspects of career development; and Gary Pan, president and CEO of Panacea Consulting Inc., on personal management skills.

The student chapter of IEEE at Penn College has also invited engineering students from Bucknell University and The Pennsylvania State University, as well as Penn College alumni and representatives of area businesses.

There is no fee for the conference. Guests are asked to plan their own lunch, and they may dine at any of the college's on-campus facilities.

Penn College's IEEE student chapter is made up mainly of students in the electronics technology and electronics engineering technology majors in the School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies.
