Friday, February 18, 2005
Pennsylvania College of Technology has been honored with two Bronze Awards in the 26th annual Telly Awards competition for an episode of its public-affairs television series, "Penn College & You," and a marketing DVD it sends to prospective students.
The Telly Awards, founded in 1978, honor outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. More than 10,000 entries from all 50 states and many foreign countries vie for honors in the competition.
This is the fourth consecutive year that "Penn College & You" has won a Bronze Telly Award. The series won the award in the "Information" category for "TV Programs, Segments, or Promotional Pieces" for a current-season episode about the SMART Girls (Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies for Girls) initiative at Penn College.
The episode emphasized the dire need for women in technology-rich careers and highlighted Penn College's innovative SMART Girls program for middle- and high-school girls. The 30-minute show mixed interviews with about 30 people with footage of SMART Girls activities. Tom Speicher, broadcast productions coordinator at the College, wrote and hosted the show. Christopher J. Leigh, digital media developer, shot and edited the episode. Now in its 10th season, "Penn College & You" airs on 46 cable outlets in 16 states and nationwide on the DISH Network's Universityhouse Channel. Locally, the series airs Tuesdays and Sundays at 7 p.m. on SusCom Channel 2. The Penn College Marketing DVD won a Bronze Telly in the "Miscellaneous" category for "Non-Broadcast Productions."
The marketing DVD was developed in-house by a team of professionals from the Offices of Admissions; College Information and Community Relations; Instructional Technology and Distance Learning; and Information Technology Services. The DVD is sent to student prospects, school guidance counselors and others to increase awareness of Penn College's innovative "degrees that work."
In the Telly Awards, judges rate each entry on a 10-point scale. Entries with a score of 9.0 or higher receive the Silver Telly (about 7-10 percent of all entries). Entries with an average score of 7.0-8.9 receive the Bronze Telly (about 18-25 percent of all entries). Entries don't compete against one another; they compete against a high standard of excellence.
