'Cat Tales Men's BasketballIn the first-ever meeting between Greater Williamsport's two colleges, Penn College overcame a 12-point second-half deficit and lost by just two against Lycoming College, an NCAA Division III team that is the defending Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom League champ. Ken Vialet (Manhattan, N.Y.), returning after missing five games, led the Wildcats with 16 points while Adam Walker (Williamsport) and Dawan Moore (Buffalo, N.Y.) each added 13 points.
After a non-league home game Wednesday against Luzerne County Community College, Penn College turns its attention to the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference for its last 13 games of the regular season. In conference games thus far, the Wildcats are 3-2.
Women's BasketballAfter what will be a 30-day break since its last game, the Penn College women return to the court Wednesday at Lehigh-Carbon with the core of the team still intact and coach Ron Kodish hopeful of adding a few players in the new semester to deepen bench strength.
Penn College is 7-3 so far and Kodish is elated.
"I just wanted to be competitive, but to be in second place in both of the conferences we compete in (Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference and Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference) is cause for celebration," said the coach. "It's very satisfying to be there, but there's a whole half-season to go and hopefully we can continue to build on the success of the first half," Kodish added.
Through their first 10 games, the Lady Wildcats scored an average of 68.3 points on offense and allowed just 50.2. Katlyn Stupar (State College) paced the offense by averaging 33 points per game, followed by Natalie Plavi (Elderton) at 11.5 points per game and Jen Racho (Hazleton) with 10.2 per outing.
Kodish knows that opposing teams will focus more on Stupar during the second half of the season, but he hopes that his other players will step up their games to compensate.
"It's exciting to see a young team in this position," Kodish added.
