'Cat Tales Men's Basketball Five players scored in double figures against Lehigh Carbon, with O'Dell Jones (Levittown) leading the pack with 20 points. Getting continued good defensive play Sam Fatherly (Williamsport) forced four steals the Wildcats opened a 46-25 halftime lead and coasted from there. Adam Walker (Williamsport) pulled down 10 rebounds.
Competing in the Blue Jay Classic and playing against an NCAA Division III opponent for the first time since its program gained four-year eligibility status this season, Penn College fell to host Elizabethtown in the first round. Both teams forced a significant number of turnovers (the Wildcats committed 31 and Elizabethtown 25), but the Blue Jays, in their first game of the season, mustered more offense.
Jones led Penn College's scorers with 14 points and Dawan Moore (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 11. Adam Walker and Tony Flint (Port Allegheny) each had five rebounds for the Wildcats and Ken Vialet (Manhattan, N.Y.) had six assists.
In the consolation game of the Blue Jay Classic, Penn College fell to Washington (Md.) College. Fatherly led the Wildcats with 13 points and Jones added 10. Adam Walker grabbed 11 rebounds. Greg Davis, a 6-foot-7 senior center from Kutztown, earned a berth on the all-tournament team after finishing with six points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Host Elizabethtown edged Scranton, 63-61, for the tournament title.
Women's Basketball Katlyn Stupar (State College) recorded a double-double for Penn College against Penn StateDelaware with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Jen Racho (Hazleton) added 21 points.
A defense that forced 28 turnovers and an offensive outburst of a season-high 37 points from Stupar gave the Lady Wildcats their third straight victory and a win over Luzerne. Stupar added 16 rebounds to her performance and Janell Thompson (Northern Potter) had 10 caroms. Natalie Plavi (Elderton) added 11 points in a winning cause.
Penn College closed out a perfect 3-0 week by beating Penn State Abington for its fourth straight win. Stupar again stood out offensively, scoring 29 points and hiking her season average to 27.6 points per game, but it is the Lady Wildcats' defense that is turning things around this season. A year ago, during a 2-22 season, Penn College gave up nearly 64 points a game. Through five games this season, it has allowed an average of just over 46.
