Pennsylvania College of Technology has hired Dr. Thomas J. Campana, an oncologic surgeon with Susquehanna Health System, to head its new Surgical Technology Program.
"We are very pleased to have Dr. Campana with us and look forward to watching him build a strong and successful Surgical Technology Program," said Dr. Deborah A. Wilson, dean of health sciences at the College.
Dr. Campana is a graduate of Boston University and Temple University School of Medicine. He joined the School of Health Sciences as director of surgical technology in October on a part-time basis and will begin working at the College full time in January.
"I am proud to be a member of the Penn College family, and I look forward to developing a quality program to match the other excellent programs offered at the College," Dr. Campana said.
Penn College began offering an associate-degree program in Surgical Technology this fall. The College is seeking accreditation for the program through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in collaboration with the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology. The accreditation process cannot begin until classes are conducted.
Twenty-seven students are enrolled in the Surgical Technology Program. Dr. Wilson will advise them until January.
The new major was developed in response to a nationwide shortage of qualified workers in the surgical technology field. Surgical technologists provide care to patients before, during and after surgery and act as an integral part of the surgical team during surgical procedures.
