Friday at Penn State-Hazleton, Penn College needed one win to qualify for the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference playoffs. It dropped the first game 4-3, despite a 3-for-4 plate performance by Heagy, but rebounded in the second game with a 15-hit assault that produced an 11-1 win. Hitting leaders in the second contest were Brad Reed (Pine Grove) and Andy Herbert (Emmett O'Brian, Conn.), who both went 3-for-4. Reed also tripled and Herbert had a double while pitcher Jarred Rabell (Northwestern) limited Hazleton to two hits. Another strong pitching performance by Heagy had the Wildcats up 1-0 on a one-hitter going into the bottom of the seventh inning against top-seeded Northampton Community College in the EPCC playoffs Saturday, but Northampton scored two runs on three hits in its last at-bat to pull out the victory. Later in the day, Penn College fell behind Penn State-Abington 7-2, but rallied for three runs to make it closer before being eliminated. Heagy went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in during that game. "Heagy was the guy that came to play," said Penn College coach Mike Stanzione. "We met our original goal, and that was to be a playoff team," Stanzione continued. "With predominately a freshman team, we learned a lot that will carry over into our spring season and next fall; to know what it takes to be a playoff team and to win a game in the playoffs." The Wildcats get another crack at Penn State Abington at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference semifinal. The winner of that game will play the victor of a game between Penn State Hazleton and Penn State Delaware.Men's SoccerMike Angell (Central York) scored the lone goal against once-beaten Penn State Hazleton as the Wildcat men suffered their first league loss of the campaign. On Saturday, Penn College rebounded with a win over Reading Community College.Cross Country In the Bloomsburg Invitational against mostly NCAA Division II and III competition, Wildcat runners Todd Lambert (Bangor) and Jennie Mull (Huntingdon) both finished 39th in their respective divisions. As a team, the Penn College men finished last. Penn College didn't have enough runners to field a full women's team. This Saturday, the Wildcats compete in the PCAA/CCAC championships at University Park.Women's Volleyball Penn College got great play from everyone that coach Bambi Hawkins put out on the court in its regular-season finale as it took all three games against Penn State Fayette and secured the top seed going into the CCAC West Division playoffs. In the match, leaders were Maria McNett (Canton) who was 22 of 22 on her serves, Maria Bova (Bethlehem Catholic) had 18 digs, Amber Geckle (Indian Valley) had 23 assists and Natalie Plavi (Elderton) with 12 kills. The win avenged a 3-1 loss in the season opener at Penn State Fayette. In the CCAC West playoffs on Sunday, the Lady Wildcats, despite the distracting loss of starting setter and captain Geckle to injury in the first game of the semifinals, went on to capture the division title and advance to this Sunday's conference championship at University Park. During the West semis, Penn College eased past Penn State Beaver, 30-14, 30-16, 30-16, while Penn State Fayette outlasted Penn State DuBois, 22-30, 30-26, 30-28, 30-19. In the hard-fought title match, the Wildcats prevailed 32-30, 30-26, 30-19. According to coach Hawkins, setter Melani Grady (Youngsville) compiled 22 assists during the two matches and got good help from McNett, who stepped it up for the injured Geckle. As a whole, the team had 62 kills, with Janell Thompson (Northern Potter) leading the way with 18 and Courtney Eisenhofer (Schuylkill Valley) adding 15. Grady, Eisenhofer and Ann Allton (York Catholic) each had three aces in the finale while Bova had 13 digs on the day.GolfShaun McQuay, a freshman from Warrior Run, won medalist honors during the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championships early last week when he beat Matt Duffy of Penn State Mont Alto, a graduate of South Williamsport High, in a one-hole playoff. Both ended regulation play tied with 77s. Also for Penn College, Jeff Kerr II (Bloomsburg) shot a 78, Tony Stopper (Jersey Shore) had an 82, Gilbert Balliet (Warrior Run) an 83, Brandon Smith (Wellsboro) an 84 and Scott Dawson (Danville) an 88. In team scoring, the Wildcats shot a 320, followed by Luzerne County Community College 334, Northampton Community College 335 and Bucks County Community College and Penn State-Mont Alto with 341 each. "We didn't play real well. The scores were probably the highest (in a championship) since I've been coaching," Wildcat coach Chet Schuman said. But, because they were high across the board for everyone in the field, Penn College walked away with the team title for the second year in a row and, said Schuman, "We'll take that and run out of town and be happy." Today and Tuesday, Penn College will compete for titles in the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association and Commonwealth Campus Athletic Association on the Penn National course at Fayetteville. Competing for Penn College in the PCAA portion of the tournament will be McQuay, Kerr, Smith, Stopper and Balliet. Dawson will be the first alternate. Because of the CCAC's four-year eligibility rule, Wildcat Matt Haile (Shikellamy), the defending PCAA champion, will join them for the CCAC portion of the event. Penn National, Schuman said, is the kind of course where fairway accuracy is a must. Greens, he predicted, will be fast. "I would expect that not only Matt, but everyone we have on our roster, potentially, all six can shoot in the 70s. If they play their game they could go low," said Schuman. "They're a good group of players who play well and support each other well. "They know their game and they know what to do, so I'm hoping they just do it two more days," the coach added.
