Gaylord Schanilec Exhibit Coming to Gallery at Penn College
Monday, March 29, 2004
"Bookends," an exhibit of works by printmaker and book artist Gaylord Schanilec, will be presented April 2-30 at The Gallery at Penn College on the main campus of Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Schanilec, an acknowledged master of centuries-old engraving and printing techniques, will present an artist's talk at 5:15 p.m. on April 6. The talk and the exhibit opening, which will run from 4:30 to 7 p.m. that day are free and open to the public. The exhibit also will hold special 6-to-9 p.m. hours during Williamsport's "First Friday" event on April 2.
After the opening, viewing hours for the show will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2 to 6 p.m., or by appointment. The gallery is located in Room 202 of the Bush Campus Center.
Schanilec, who holds a bachelor's degree in visual arts from the University of North Dakota, beautifully combines wood engraving and old-fashioned printing methods with by-hand bookbinding. His work is exhibited internationally and is in dozens of museum, corporate and university collections including a complete collection at the University of Minnesota.
With a reputation that far transcends his remote studio, Schanilec found perhaps his greatest success in 1987 with "High Bridge," which chronicles (in woodcuts and old typefaces) the history and demolition of a wrought-iron span over the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minn.
