Penn College to Host Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Woodsman Meet

Student teams from six colleges will test their mettle in the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Woodsman Meet at Pennsylvania College of Technology on April 24, an event that also will feature a lumberjack sports challenge conducted by event co-sponsor Stihl Inc.
The activities, which include a reunion of Penn College Forestry alumni, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the College's Schneebeli Earth Science Center, 203 Allenwood Camp Lane, Montgomery (just off Route 15, 10 miles south of the Williamsport main campus). The public is welcome, and there is no admission charge.
In addition to Penn College, the participating institutions are: Penn State Mont Alto; Allegany College of Maryland; Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, Clifton Forge, Va.; Haywood Community College, Clyde, N.C.; and Montgomery Community College, Troy, N.C.
Contests to be held in the morning are: Dendrology, Tree Identification, Archery, Team Log Roll, Pulp Toss for Distance, Chain Saw (men and women) and Pulp Toss for Accuracy. The afternoon contests are: Ax Throw (men and women), Twitching, Pole Felling with an Ax, Cross Cut Saw (men, women, and Jackand Jill), Horizontal Speed Chop and Bolt Split.
The Stihl competition events are: One-Man Sawbuck, Chain Saw and Horizontal Chop.
Throughout the day, there will be a horse-logging demonstration and displays provided by the state Game Commission, the state Fish & Boat Commission, and the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
An alumni luncheon will be held at noon in the Diesel Shop, followed by an alumni tour starting at 1:30 p.m. at the main entrance.
Raffle drawings will begin at 3 p.m. First prize is a Jonsered 2152 chain saw, second prize is $100, and third prize is $50. Raffle tickets will be offered for sale by the Forestry Club student organization at Penn College.
Food and beverages will be available throughout the event at Nature's Cove dining unit.
In addition to Stihl, other event sponsors are: Brooks Lumber and Timber Harvesting, Central Columbia Future Farmers of America, PPL Corp. and Wheeland Lumber Co. Inc.
