The Builders Association of Central Pennsylvania has established a scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology in memory of Kevin L. Zimmerman, a past president of the organization.
The Kevin L. Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund will be available to students enrolled in the School of Construction and Design Technologies at Penn College. Preference will be given to students graduating from Centre County high schools, and continuing students will be given preference in subsequent years.
Zimmerman died in a farming accident on Sept. 3, 2001. A resident of Spring Mills, he was a 1972 graduate of Bellefonte High School and the president of Pinehurst Homes of State College.
He was instrumental in the construction of the Builders Association's headquarters in State College, and served as a member of numerous boards and committees in the construction field. He organized the Home Show Committee, House Raising Committee and the Parade of Homes Committee in the State College area.
Zimmerman served as a judge for computer-aided-design drafting competitions and was a Boy Scout leader in Troops 381 and 20. He was a licensed pilot and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a member of the Walker Township Fire Co. and the National Street Rod Association.
"Kevin was instrumental in making so many things happen in the construction industry," said Nevin Long, co-owner of Long Construction and a two-time past president of the association, who worked closely with Kevin on association events. "Members always knew if they wanted something to happen, Kevin was the one who could get the job done. The stories of the things he accomplished are still talked about in many committee meetings. He was well-respected among everyone he came in contact with. His presence and dedication to an industry that he truly loved will be missed."
"This kind of commitment by an individual is the epitome of what Penn College is all about when we train and educate our students," said Dennis L. Correll, executive director of the Penn College Foundation. "Kevin's colleagues and peers certainly have selected the best memorial to him by helping those who are learning the industry and becoming craftsmen to further the craft that Kevin loved. Many students will benefit from this memorial to a great man."
Contributions will continue to be collected in Zimmerman's memory. Donations may be sent to the Penn College Foundation, One College Avenue, Williamsport, PA 17701. For more information, contact Correll at (570) 320-8020.
