Peggy Madigan Memorial Scholarship Awarded to Canton Area Teen
Friday, May 2, 2003
A Canton Area Senior High School student is the second recipient of a scholarship established last year at Pennsylvania College of Technology to honor the memory of the late wife of state Sen. Roger A. Madigan.
The "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar Committee selected Jenny A. Davison of RR 2, Canton, to receive the Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship for 2003-04.
Mrs. Madigan, of Luthers Mills, Bradford County, passed away unexpectedly in January 2002, following a brief illness. The memorial scholarship is open to high-school students who attend Sen. Madigan's "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar held annually at Penn College and subsequently enroll as full-time students at Penn College.
Davison will enroll in the College's General Studies major this fall. As with all of the applicants, she was required to write an essay describing the community service she's performed and the value it has added to her community.
Davison is president of the National Honor Society and secretary of the senior class at the high school, where she also is involved in drama, volleyball, the school newspaper, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and Student Council. She also is involved with her church youth group and the Future Farmers of America.
In her essay, Davison quotes Albert Einstein, who said, "Only a life lived for others is worth living." Her volunteer efforts demonstrate her commitment in the lives of many others.
The Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship may be used to help defray the costs of tuition, fees, books, housing, tools and other required supplies.
Sen. Madigan's "Pennsylvania's Tomorrow Starts Today" Student Government Seminar brings together students from high schools throughout his district with elected officials, members of the Commonwealth's executive branch, representatives of special interest groups and the news media for a day of panel discussions that provide insight into the workings of state government.
