Green Building Fair to Highlight Environmentally Friendly Products
Wednesday, April 2, 2003
Environmentally friendly building products and services will be on display April 14-15, when the fourth annual Green Building Fair is presented at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
The builders' show, which will be held at the Penn College Field House from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 14 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 15, will feature products that promote healthy, comfortable buildings and are beneficial to the environment. Centex Homes is serving as corporate sponsor for the fair, which is open to the public at no charge.
Keynote speaker Sara R. Francis, director of the Colorado Straw Bale Association, will present two lectures on April 14 and a hands-on construction workshop on April 15. The lectures will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon (Straw Bale Design and Construction) and 4 to 5 p.m. (Sustainable Building Materials). Francis' workshop, "Building and Finishing Straw Bale Construction," as well as a computer workshop to be presented by Andrew Lau, "Energy-10 Building Energy Modeling," require registration and have limited seating capacity. Francis' workshop will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m.; Lau's workshop is from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 15.
Other lectures and presentations will be offered on both days of the event, addressing topics ranging from high-efficiency heating and lighting-industry trends to building performance/air quality and wind and solar energy.
All lectures and workshops are free. Some lectures and workshops will offer AIA continuing-education credits; architects must register and fill out paperwork at the event to receive credit.
Backyard Broadcasting will offer a live radio broadcast at the fair from 3 to 6 p.m. on April 14 on WBZD 93.3 FM, WILQ 105.1 FM and WZXR 99.3 and 103.7 FM.
"Blue Vinyl," an award-winning documentary on polyvinyl chloride products, will be shown at 3:30 p.m. on April 15.
Green products and services emphasize a healthy environment for building occupants and/or the manufacturing process. They may reduce energy usage and take advantage of nature for heating, cooling and lighting. Green products also may be made from recycled products and often are recycled when they wear out.
The Field House is located at the southwest corner of Penn College's main campus. Parking is available nearby.
